Tooter explores the gap between knowing a language and feeling confident enough to speak it. By using AI to create natural conversations in a safe and supportive environment, it gives learners space to practice, make mistakes, and build confidence at their own pace. Through adaptive conversations and thoughtful feedback, Tooter turns each interaction into progress, making language learning feel less like studying and more like simply speaking.
Knowing a language is different from knowing how to use it.
Language-learning apps have become good at teaching vocabulary, grammar, and sentence structure. But real conversations don't follow a lesson plan. They move quickly, change direction, and require people to respond to things they didn't expect.
That gap can leave learners with the knowledge to construct a sentence, but not always the confidence to say it.
Consistency builds knowledge. Conversation builds confidence.
Many apps are effective at helping people build foundational knowledge, but offer fewer opportunities to practice the unpredictable nature of speaking.
We also saw how much consistency matters. Progress in language learning doesn't happen in a single session. It comes from returning, practicing, and gradually becoming more comfortable using the language.
We saw an opportunity to make speaking practice more motivating by giving learners a clearer sense of how they were progressing.
Instead of treating language learning as a single score, Tooter looks at the conversation itself: how learners communicate, how they respond, and how their confidence develops over time.
Conversation begins with a sense of readiness.
We designed the starting point around choice and comfort. Learners can select a scene, choose an AI teacher or conversation partner, and adjust settings such as conversation speed. Tooter gives learners a sense of what they're stepping into.
The best practice responds to you.
Once a conversation begins, Tooter moves away from traditional exercises and into an open exchange.
The AI adapts to the learner's level, asks follow-up questions, remembers previous conversations, and adjusts the difficulty as the interaction develops. Instead of following a predetermined sequence of questions, the conversation can evolve based on what the learner says.
